Why Not?

"Why not?" is the quiet doorway between the life you have and the life you secretly imagine.

Most of us stand at that door for a long time. Are we afraid of the unknown, or simply too comfortable with the known? Both. At the same time.

We're not cowards. We're not without vision. We simply know, by instinct, that stepping through changes things, and change, even toward something better, asks something of us. So we linger. We make reasonable arguments. We wait for a sign that the crossing is safe.

The painter knows this doorway. It's the moment before the unconventional mark, when every instinct says that's not how it's done. The photographer knows it, the decision to wait for a subject no one else can see yet, trusting something that hasn't arrived. The sculptor knows it as the first strike of the chisel, when the stone is still whole and the choice is still reversible.

It never stays reversible. That's the point. The choice is what makes it real.

Every creative life is, at its center, a practice of choosing, not once, but again and again. Not with certainty, but with the willingness to move before certainty arrives. The problem isn't knowing what to do. The problem is deciding to do it anyway, in the full presence of doubt.

The great spiritual traditions have always understood this. Faith is not the absence of uncertainty. It is the decision to walk through the door while the outcome is still unknown.

Why not? is an act of faith.
