Sally Nicholson

Sally Nicholson weaves icons. She works in the language of symbols, drawing on the mythical, the heroic, and the historical. Her subjects are people and objects that have left their mark on her. She gives them form in cloth. The medium is patient. An icon can take months to say what it means.

Each piece begins with a central image. Around it she gathers motifs, and the motifs carry the feeling. Humor sits beside pathos. A figure can be honored and gently teased in the same frame. Nothing is fixed. The tension is the point.

Nicholson comes to fiber with a deep love of the material itself. She delights in fabric, in vivid color, in texture you want to touch. That pleasure is visible in the work. Surface and meaning are not separate here. The richness of the cloth is part of what the icon says.

Her sources are the world's mythologies. She reads across cultures and centuries, and she borrows freely. The result is a vocabulary that is hers alone, built from fragments that once belonged to everyone. An old symbol arrives in a new hand and shifts. It means something it did not mean before.

Behind the icons is a life of varied work. Nicholson has done many things before arriving at the loom, and none of it is wasted. Past skills return as instinct. A choice learned in one trade shapes a gesture made in another. The finished piece holds all of it at once.

To stand before this work is to meet a private mythology made public. The symbols may be ancient. The reasons for choosing them are personal. Nicholson does not tell you which is which. She leaves that to you.
